Advanced Training – 60 Minute Instrument Flight

A 60‑minute instrument‑flying lesson is a structured introduction to flying the aircraft using only the instruments. This training can only be taken once you hold a PPL, and forms part of the syllabus for the UK IR(R) rating. It’s a calm, focused session that builds precision, discipline, and confidence.

After a detailed briefing on the ground, you’ll head out to the aircraft and begin your lesson. Once airborne, your instructor will guide you through the fundamentals of instrument flying, demonstrate key techniques, and give you hands‑on time to practise them yourself.

A structured introduction to instrument‑flying skills.

Hands‑on practice with a qualified instrument‑rated instructor.

Even in an hour, you’ll gain a clear understanding of how instrument flying works and why it’s such a valuable skill for private pilots.

What's Involved?

A structured instrument‑flying lesson that introduces the essentials and gives you time to practise them in the air.

  • Pre‑flight briefing covering instrument‑flying fundamentals
  • A full hour of dual instruction under simulated instrument conditions
  • Demonstration and practice of basic instrument manoeuvres
  • Instructor feedback and time for questions after landing
  • Are there any medical restrictions?

Most pilots can take part in instrument training without any issues. If you have a medical condition that affects mobility, balance, or breathing, just let us know so we can advise you properly.

  • Are there any weight or size limitations?

Yes — light aircraft have practical limits. If you’re unsure whether this applies to you, get in touch and we’ll confirm before you book.

  • Do I need a licence to do this?

Yes — instrument‑flying training for the IR(R) can only be taken once you hold a PPL.

  • Can I bring someone with me?

Some training aircraft have a spare seat, which can be used depending on weight and balance. If this is important to you, ask us when booking.

  • What happens if the weather is bad?

If conditions aren’t suitable, we’ll simply reschedule your lesson for another day. Safety and comfort always come first.

  • Does this count toward the IR(R)?

Yes — all dual‑instruction time can be logged and counts toward the hours required for the IR(R) rating.
